Sheridan sees both films as part of a trilogy of вЂњthe modern-day American frontier,вЂќ he said, вЂњabout how much has changed in 100 years, and how much things havenвЂ™t. вЂњSicarioвЂќ was вЂњtoxic,вЂќ he said among other things, it had a female lead. Sheridan, a Texas-born former actor who, in the tradition of вЂњThe Last Picture ShowвЂќ and вЂњHudвЂќ author Larry McMurtry (another Texan whose stories fueled some great Hollywood movies), set his story in the Lone Star State. Hell or High Water is the result of that increasingly rare invention: an original screenplay. The film examines the hopelessness Pine & Bridges face when up against cold bureaucracy, one forced into breaking the law, the other resigned to uphold it. The antagonists in Hell or High Water arenвЂ™t even the cops or outlaws, but the corrupt faceless institutions (capitalist and governmental) that control them. Hell or High Water though has far more on its mind than a simple outlaws-versus-cops morality tale. On their trail, two Texas Marshalls (Jeff Bridges & Gil Birmingham) investigate the robberies, seeking to bring the culprits to justice.

One of them, Sicario, an ambitious drug-trade thriller, was made into a movie last year, Hell or High Water.Д«en Foster and Chris Pine star as bank-robbing brothers, holding-up the very banks that are threatening to take away their land. He wrote three scripts in quick succession. вЂњI just lost interest in performing,вЂќ he explains.

But Sheridan had no desire to star in the movies he was writing. Most actors who write a screenplay do it because theyвЂ™re unhappy with the roles theyвЂ™ve been getting. By then, he was ready to get on the other side of the camera. He had the role for two seasons before being killed off in the third seasonвЂ™s debut.
